About this Chic Retreat
Shu'mata Camp is a luxury safari camp at the foot of Kilimanjaro with views to the seven sisters and the private Amboseli plains. The perfect safari destination, this chic retreat has just 5 Heminway-style tents, each with a private verandah from which to enjoy views over the surrounding Masai steppe. Shu'mata Camp has free-roaming wildlife and your expert rangers, watchmen and Masai warriors will guide you on game drives during which you may spot zebra, elephants, wildebeest, oryx, Grants and Thompson Gazelle, eland and other species that walk the savannah bush. In this landscape, the land where the film Hatari! was filmed, you are sure to spot many animals along your safari and the landscape itself is truly inspirational. On your return, enjoy a Hemingway whiskey out on your private verandah as the sun sets, to the music of the crickets & zebra and the distant call of the hyena.
Combine your trip to Shu'mata Camp with a stay at the gorgeous Hatari Lodge in the Kilimanjaro Safari Circuit taking in the mountain rainforests of the Arusha National Park, the villages of the Meru people and the Momella lakes, or enjoy your safari from Shu'mata, which works equally welll as a standalone camp. Go back in time to the safari life of the 1920s in this idyllic camp, with its team of friendly, attentive and knowledgable staff to help you get the most out of your safari trip.
Accommodation
There are 5 luxurious safari tents at Shu'mata Camp, each designed in a Hemingway style with a nod to the safari life of the 1920s. Lockable trunks, classic dressing tables, Hemingway-style hanging cupboards & tray stands by the bed blend wonderfully with the bright colours of the Masai and natural fabrics from Tanzania. Enjoy spectacular views over the Amboseli plains, the Seven Sisters and Kilimanjaro from your private verandah and out through the large panoramic tent windows.
The en-suite bathrooms, with a mixture of Hundertwasser, Tuareg and Masai styles have open-air showers with running water and sensuous Arbor Oils of Africa bath products and towels are provided. In true colonial style, old fashioned water jugs sit by the twin enamel basins.
Activities
Start the day with a game drive across the plains where you will spot zebra, giraffe Grant's gazelle and impala among other species. Enjoy lunch back at the camp overlooking the Masai Steppe leading up to the majestic Kilimanjaro. The next day, head out with Masai warrior guides to explore the flora, fauna and insects of the park before a bush breakfast and spot game by foot, while in the afternoon you can enjoy another game drive through the Masai Steppe or return to the camp to soak up the view in peace. Or how about tracking elephants for the morning following the migratory route in search of the Amboseli tuskers?
At the end of each day, you can enjoy a sundowner before heading back to the camp. After a full day, you can relax in the Mess Tent with a Hemingway whiskey among the designs charting safaris throughout time from Vintage to Safari Baroque and Arabian nights.
Dining
Meals are served in the stylish Mess Tent, outdoors around the camp, or out in the bush. Meals served in the camp are silver service, with international cuisine, delicious grills or safari-style meals from the cast iron pot. A good selection of wines and whiskeys are available in the safari bar to compliment your meal.
Rates
Rates at Shu'mata Camp includes full board accommodation, tea and coffees, all drinks, concession fees, community fees, scheduled safari activities in shared open-topped vehicles, laundry service and transfers from/to West Kilimanjaro Airstrip. Individual rates for solo travellers are available on request. For children sharing with 1 or 2 adults, when aged 0-3 years, stay is free of charge. Safari circuit rates available on request.

Cancellation policy
Reservations/Bookings that are cancelled, reduced in length of stay, number of rooms or persons (hereincollectively called CANCELLATION) are subject to a cancellation and ‘no show’ charges policy at thediscretion of the company under the following terms:120-36 days prior to arrival: 25% deposit forfeiture35-8 days prior to arrival: 50% cancellation fee will be charged.7 days or less prior to arrival: 100% cancellation fee will be charged.
