Too many boutique hotels just dress a bed nicely to hide a cheap old mattress, but at Casa do Dean in Bahia, Brazil, a good night's sleep is top of the agenda. All the beds are custom made, with high-quality mattresses shipped in and there are black-out curtains, but in white for aesthetic reasons. The vision is very specific - think New York-style loft but with a Brazilian touch, with quirky lamps from Buenos Aires, retro film posters from Sao Paulo and artworks from the local area. The entire house is available for exclusive rental only and operates like a small hotel. There are 2 bedrooms and three new apartments (two of which can be interconnected to accommodate parents with young children)- and an off-site English 'concierge'. These new rooms are on a new deck below the existing house but with the same impressive view of the Atlantic Forest.It is a 5-minute walk from the often-secluded beaches of Arraial d'Ajuda. The house comes with a fantastic 'House Book' which is a custom written guide to the local area, day trips, restaurants and personal recommendations from the owner.
