As Janelas Verdes - Lisbon, Portugal

About this Chic Retreat

As Janelas Verdes is a small luxury hotel overlooking the river Tagus in old Lisbon. With a stylish Neo-Classical design, that fits perfectly in this 18th-century palace, this chic retreat has a feeling of grandeur, with nothing taken away in terms of comfort. In the newer quarter, the more contemporary style blends perfectly with the neoclassical design of this grand boutique hotel. Large sofas, plump pillows and thick drapes lend rooms an inviting, homely feel, perfect for a relaxing evening after exploring this exciting city. Eça de Queiros, one of Portugal's greatest writers, is said to have lived in the palace, taking inspiration for "O Ramalhete" in The Maias from his palatial home. In the older part objets d'art, books, mementoes and paintings make reference to the buildings cultural past. Situated directly next to the Museum of Ancient Art, some of the best sites in Lisbon are close by, and guests can enjoy far-reaching views over the Tagus river from the roof-top terrace. In the warmer seasons, enjoy breakfast out in the romantic courtyard garden with its mosaics, shrubbery and vines. As Janelas Verdes is a place for romance, and perfect for exploring Lisbon's old centre.

The 29 rooms at As Janelas Verdes have a neoclassical style with dark wood furnishing, upholstered chairs and a great use of fabrics from the thick floral drapes to the luxurious bedding. All rooms have air-conditioning, LCD Satellite TVs, CD-DVD players & complimentary WiFi. Rooms come with twins or doubles, with a spacious king-size bed in the Superior room. Activities

This pretty chic retreat has a lovely garden, where guests can take tea and a library for a quiet evening read. Guests are encouraged to feel right at home with the self-service My Bar, and on a balmy evening, guests can enjoy their drink up on the roof terrace overlooking the Tagus. Right next door, guests can visit the Museum of Ancient Art, one of the most important in the city, housing the Ecce Homo and Bosch's Temptation of St. Anthony. Rua Das Janelas Verdes and the surrounding streets are rich in history and guests can happily while away a day wandering the old city. For shopping, visit the Santos Design District, Lisbon's centre of design, and neighbouring this district is the grand Sao Bento and Lapa with its array of 18th-century architecture. Fees can be arranged for golfers on one of the nearby courses. Of course, by evening, the city really comes alive, and your hosts will be able to recommend bars and clubs to suit all tastes.

Dining

A buffet breakfast can be enjoyed in the dining room or in warmer weather, out in the garden. The colourful buffet includes cereals, breads, quince jam, curd cheese, cheese and ham, yoghurts, honey, homemade jams, cake and cookies. For dinner, we recommend Nariz de Vinho Tinto, an Alentejo inspired restaurant close to As Janelas Verdes which has an excellent wine list. There is a 24-hour room service menu available with sandwiches, salads and snacks.
