Bhainsrorgarh Fort - Rajasthan, India
About this Chic Retreat
Bhainsrorgarh Fort is a small boutique hotel in the erstwhile kingdom of Mewar, Rajasthan. This wonderfully-restored palace has just 5 rooms and as you would expect from a family-run hideaway, guests receive the utmost in personalized service. Interiors have been treated with an eye to the fort's historic past, with colourful stained-glass and brightly-died fabrics adding splashes of colours to the natural palette of stone flooring, white walls and antique wood fixtures and furnishings. Overlooking the River Chambal, guests can observe crocodiles from the rooms & terraces and nature lovers will be in their element, with game drives at the Mukundara National Park and guided tours of the forests and river. The area is also steeped in history, with The Baroli temples just 15 minutes drive from this chic retreat. This grand fort is great for a family tour, romantic break or that once-in-a-lifetime trip to discover the ruins and dramatic scenery of Rajasthan.
Accommodation
There are 5 individually decorated suites at Bhainsrorgarh Fort, all with private balconies (2 of which are particularly large) from which to admire the breathtaking views over the river and hills. Rooms are either twins or doubles and are fitted with fine cotton sheets. The en-suite bathrooms have showers and Khadi or Forest Essentials bath products, bathrobes, towels & slippers. Each room has a distinct charm, from the carved doorway arches leading into the Mewar Suite's living area to the Bhainsrorgarh Suite and the Fateh Vilas Suite with their large river-facing balcony. All room have mini-bars, tea & coffee making machines, hair dryers, air-conditioning & ceiling fans and hot water bottles & heaters are provided to keep you cosy in colder snaps.
Activities
The surrounding forests, river and Mukundara National Park are perfect for walking, hiking and guided tours and your knowledgeable hosts can arrange jeep safaris, tribal tours, boat trips, bird-watching, fishing and even a romantic evening of stargazing. On a game trip to the Mukundara park, though not as populated as some of Indias other reserves and wildlife parks, you may come across sambhar, chital, sloth bear, hyena, jackals, panther, foxes, four horn deer and langur monkeys, while crocodiles can be spotted in the Chumbal River beyond the fort, with the endangered Gharial crocodile to be found on a nearby island. The area is rich in historical architecture, including the 12th-century Menal temples, the 12th & 13th-century Bijolia temples and the 9th-century Baroli temple network. Day trips to Kota, Bundi, Chittogarh and Ranthambore can also be arranged, among other nearby destinations.
Dining
Dinner is served in the dining room or out on the terrace overlooking the river with a table d'hote and buffet menu of sumptuous Indian and Rajasthan cuisine. Guests can also enjoy an aperitif out on the lawns in the garden or a barbecue supper. For breakfast, enjoy a mix of Indian & Continental dishes with eggs to order.
